Frequently Asked Questions
No. Travelet has no accounts and no logins. Open the App, create a trip, start logging expenses. If you're signed into iCloud on your iPhone, your data automatically syncs to your other iPhones via your private iCloud database. We never see your data.
Tap the FAB (the “+” button at the bottom), pick “Scan”, and point your camera at a receipt. Travelet uses Apple's document scanner for capture, then sends the image to our backend proxy which forwards it to a vision LLM (Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude). The model returns the merchant, total, line items, currency, and date as structured fields, which Travelet pre-fills into the expense form for you to review and save.
Receipt images are forwarded to our backend proxy and onward to the LLM provider for the immediate scan request, then dropped — we don't keep them on disk. Voice is recognized on-device using iOS Speech; only the resulting transcript is sent for parsing, not raw audio. Neither is retained beyond the request. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.
Each AI receipt scan costs us a small amount in API fees to the LLM provider. To make the App sustainable without ads, accounts, or subscriptions, we cap the free scans (5 on first launch) and offer optional one-time scan packs for users who want more. Manual expense entry is always free and unlimited. Voice input falls back to on-device parsing if the cloud parser is unavailable.
Each trip has a budget currency that you set when creating the trip. Each expense is logged in its own currency. Travelet fetches live rates from frankfurter.app (a public European Central Bank API) and converts every expense into the trip's budget currency for the dashboard total. Both the original and converted amounts are stored, so the original receipt total is never lost.
Two reasons: (1) when you add an expense, Travelet can suggest nearby places (restaurants, shops) so you don't have to type the merchant name; (2) the Map tab plots all your trip's expenses on a map so you can see where the money went. Coordinates are read on-device only and stored solely on the expense you save. You can deny location and still use the App fully — you just won't get the nearby suggestions or map view.
If you're signed into iCloud on your iPhone, Travelet uses Apple's CloudKit framework to sync your trips and expenses across all your iPhones automatically. The data lives in your private iCloud database — we have no access to it. There's no toggle to enable, no separate Travelet account; iCloud sync is on whenever your device is signed into iCloud and Travelet is allowed to use iCloud (Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Travelet).
Every AI-extracted field is editable before you save. The amount, currency, items, category, and merchant can all be tweaked or replaced. If the scan returned no items at all, you'll see a refund button and your scan credit is automatically returned. If you'd like us to investigate a problematic receipt, tap “Report problem” on the scan result screen — it opens a pre-filled email with diagnostic info.
Yes. Tap the share icon in the top-right of the dashboard or the All-expenses screen and choose CSV or PDF. CSV is convenient for spreadsheets and accounting; PDF is a print-ready summary of the trip. Both formats include all expense fields (date, category, merchant, amount in original and trip currency).
Delete the App from each iPhone where it's installed and disable Travelet under Settings > Apple ID > iCloud. That removes both the on-device data and the iCloud copy. We have no copies on our servers because we never store your trips or expenses.
Manual expense entry, browsing, editing, statistics, and the map all work fully offline. Things that need a connection: AI receipt scan, AI voice parsing (falls back to a simpler on-device parser when offline), and currency conversion (uses cached rates if rates can't be fetched). Your data stays on the device; iCloud sync resumes when you're back online.
